Formula 1 is back in Shanghai for the first time since 2019, with this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix featuring the first Sprint Race of the 2024 season, presenting unique challenges for the teams.
Williams is eagerly anticipating these “fascinating challenges.”
Williams has faced difficulties in recent weeks, including unexpected seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship last season. Issues like Alexander Albon’s practice accident in Australia and a lack of backup chassis have put pressure on the team. Despite setbacks, the team persevered and arrived at Suzuka without a backup chassis for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Once again, Williams faces challenges this week as they return to China without a backup chassis.
“The return to Shanghai for the first Sprint race of 2024 presents a unique challenge. The circuit’s mix of corners and long straight poses a demanding track for drivers, cars, and tires,” said Dave Robson, the team’s Head of Vehicle Performance.
Robson added, “Tackling this circuit after a long absence and with limited practice sessions won’t be easy, but we are excited for the opportunity and plan to utilize the updated Sprint regulations to maximize our performance.”
Williams is bringing upgrades to the Shanghai International Circuit as they aim to kick off their 2024 campaign successfully.
The team has been working hard to prepare for the weekend, including aerodynamic updates to the cars.
For Sargeant, it will be his first Chinese Grand Prix, requiring extensive simulator preparation.
Sargeant commented, “I’m excited for my first race in China. I’ve been preparing on the simulator to understand the track. With limited running time before Sprint Qualifying, we need to make the most of practice to set up the car for success.”
Albon, who revealed a panda-themed helmet for the race, faces the challenge of getting up to speed quickly at a track he hasn’t raced at in a while.
Albon expressed gratitude for the team’s hard work in preparing for China and highlighted the challenge of racing at a circuit not driven on in over five years.
